Free SSL Certificate

Is it possible to setup a secure website without buying an SSL Certificate.

The answer to this question is yes. There are 2 ways to accomplish this.

  • make your own SSL certificate,
  • get a free certificate from someone online.

There are a few drawbacks however to free certificates. The first is that if you create your own certificate that browsers will not recognize you as a CA (Certificate Authority) - it is likely that a free SSL Certificate provider will cause a similar problem. What this means is that when a browser goes to your secure https pages that the user will likely get a scary loooking message stating that connection is untrusted. If you are selling something online and a buyer is confronted by a message like this it can really affect sales. The user will manually have to verify that they trust the certificate. They really aren't going to want to trust you with their credit card information if you're too cheap to spend a few bucks on a normal trusted SSL Certificate.
