Email Certificates

A digital certificate allows you to receive encrypted email and and to digitally sign sent mail so the recipient knows that the email is from you.  The way it generally works is that you send someone an email that has been signed with your Digital ID and then they store the certificate in their address book.  They can then send you encrypted email

You can get a digital ID for secure email from many of the Certificate Authorities (CA's) such as VeriSign and Comodo.  The recipient of email you send will then know its from you  and that the content is private throughout the transmission if it is encrypted.  You will know for sure that the email address has not been spoofed. Email Certificates are inexpensive and work fine with several email applications including the following.

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Outlook Exoress
  • Microsoft Entourage
  • Apple Mail
  • Mozilla Thunderbird

. Here is some information on how to backup your digital ID.
